From Astrophysics to Barrister
College 2001
Although I done Maths in my first year, I clearly didn’t learn any lessons from my GCSEs because I really dislike Maths exams, so I switched to Physics in the 2nd year. This appealed to me because of my fascination for all things space. I never really wanted to be an astronaut, but I did get my fix from the Astrophysics module. It turns out I dislike Physics exams too.
Even though Maths and Science exams weren’t the best match for me, I still always saw myself as a mathematician, scientist, engineer kind of person. However, at college, it was Law that I fell in love with.
Law exams… I’m good at them! I set my sights on combining my strengths and weaknesses (seems a bit odd embracing weaknesses, doesn’t it…) by trying to carve out a career in Computing and Law. It’s almost like I was able to predict the future.
Computer Science ticked all the boxes from the Computing side of things (Maths and Science often involved), with the aim to eventually enrole on a Law conversion diploma, which is a faster more efficient route to becoming a Law graduate.
Specialising in Computing Law was a new thing back then, and even to this day it’s still very fresh, with increasing demand. This proves I wasn’t going crazy, but it didn’t happen (not yet anyway).
