Bachelors in Computer Science
University 2002 - 2005
Not going to lie, at some point I was starting to give up on studies, and thought about going down more of an apprenticeship pathway. However, doing so well with A-Level Law taught me that there is a place for me somewhere in the academic world.
I visited several universities before officially enrolling with Sussex. I had set my sights on Kings College London at some point, but financially I was better off staying in Sussex, and Sussex University has a decent campus.
Although the first year is the fun year, there was a bit of a learning curve, especially since we were working on Sun Microsystems. Also, I was never one of those geeky types, I was more of a pints, pie, and football person, just with a geeky streak somewhere within.
I still found the time for pints, pie, and football (of course), and achieved a first class honours. Yay! (deserved if I say so myself, but probably unexpected).
I came out of university with minimal debt too. During my studies, my father and I were travelling up and down the country buying “junk” from auctions and selling on eBay (when eBay was good). We bought ski’s at the height of the summer, and made a healthy profit. We also bought and old diving suit (yes, this sounds very Del Boy I know), which we ended up sending to Canada (if my memory serves me correct) where it’s probably on show in some museum somewhere. We bought boxes of random bits and bobs (almost blind), where individual items would go on to sell for 10’s of times more than the cost of the box. We were extremely lucky to have a very accommodating local post office too.
Sorry, back to my studies. In my 3 years studying Computer Science, I realised that I actually loved coding, so I put my Law plans on hold, and started looking for work.
